Most people can agree that happiness and fulfillment is a goal that they strive for, but not all of us achieve this goal on a regular basis. We tend to self-congratulate when things go according to plan. It’s tempting to point the finger of blame or reason at something outside of our control when things don’t go our way, pointing out he did this, she did that, or this incident or that event happened. Our inability to accept responsibility for everything we do, think, feel, and feel is destructive. Taking full responsibility for all your thoughts, feelings, and actions is true fulfillment, not just choosing the good ones and getting rid of the bad ones! It is important to remember that your life is determined by your decisions and not by the conditions around you.
The famous Oscar Wilde once said, “Be yourself, because everyone else is taken,” which means that everything that you do, say, think, feel, act on, and believe is ultimately down to you. If you are looking for a reason or a source of blame, it is actually due to the Reticular Activating System in your brain, a group of very complex neurons that determine and filter your beliefs and how you make sense of the world. Because you have developed this filter through your whole life experiences up to this point, recognise that you have the ability to do so going forward.
Our lives are influenced by various factors, but how we react or respond to these factors remains our sole responsibility. Our decisions in life are governed by our attitude, and attitude is the only choice that we have in life. Whether something is good or bad, right or wrong, it is up to you.
Coaching (business or life) can play a major influence in your life by carefully considering who and what you let into your life. With great coaching, you can see what you don’t normally see, but is actually right in front of you. It can open windows into who you are and provide mirrors that help you see what you can’t normally see. As a result, you are able to gain a better understanding of perspectives you may be overlooking and help you take action to either improve yourself or find actionable answers to overcome problems.
It doesn’t matter what you’re going through, a coach can help you find your answers. You may feel uncomfortable when confronted with an uncomfortable truth, or you may try to avoid looking at the answers. The choice is yours; you can deal with things when you want to, and on your own terms. However, keep in mind that ultimately the decision is yours. Creating greater awareness as a starting point of any personal development endeavor is a great place to begin, but hold off on your judgments and opinions. Develop interrogative thinking instead of judgemental thinking. Coaching enables you to find your own path and can help you gain personal responsibility.
Consultants and advisors are at one end of the spectrum of support, while therapists and counsellors are at the other, with one telling you what to do and the other listening and supporting you. The purpose of coaching is to support, and the fulfillment and satisfaction you will find by understanding and taking responsibility for yourself is immense.
Every one of my clients is bettering themselves and pursuing dreams and goals, no matter where they are on their journey. My role is to help them choose, but they ultimately walk through the doors. It’s them who decide, they choose, they do the work, they make the mistakes, but they also receive the glory.
At the end of the day, try to be more aware, less judgmental, and focus your energy on what serves you best. Don’t assume life is going to be easy; whoever said it would be! Be responsible, take responsibility, help yourself, and don’t forget that life’s not supposed to be easy!
Entrepreneurship is my passion, and I love hearing about other people’s journeys, so come share yours with me.
